Solution of Chapter Two: Elementary Science for PSC Students 2017

Environmental Pollution: Yes, from the name of this chapter, we can guess about it. In this chapter, we can learn various pollution, their effects, result and conservation of our environment. I think this chapter is easy to learn and memorise.
Main points of this chapter:

  1. Causes and sources of Environmental Pollution.
  2.  Effects of Environmental Pollution
  3. Air pollution
  4. Water pollution
  5. Soil pollution
  6. Noise pollution
  7. Conservation of Our Environment.

Short Answered Question (Main Text)
1. What is the environmental pollution?
Ans: Environmental pollution is the addition of harmful or poisonous substances into the environment.
2. What are the effects of air pollution?
Ans: The effects of air pollution are given below:

  1. Global warming.
  2. Acid rain.
  3. It can also make people sick with lung cancer, respiratory diseases etc.

3 . Write down the ways of environmental pollution.
Ans: The ways of environmental pollution are given below:

  1.  Population growth and industrialization.
  2. Widespread use of fossil fuels.
  3. Throwing garbage or urinating anywhere.
  4. Disposal of garbage and waste into water.
  5. Use of fertilizer and pesticides in agriculture.
  6. Unnecessary use of horns, playing songs in high volume and use of loud speakers or mikes.
  7. Using big machinery in industries.

4. What are the sources of environmental pollution?
Ans:

  1. Industrialization.
  2. Widespread use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
  3. Increasing population growth. To meet their need such as food, shelter or natural resources, people are destroying environment.
  4. Human activities.
  5. Natural disaster.

5. Write five ways of environmental conservation.
Ans: Five ways of environmental conservation are given below:

  1. Reducing the use of natural resources, reusing or recycling we can help conserving nature.
  2. We should not keep the tap running when not in use.
  3. Oils, chemicals and industrial garbage should go through treatment before throwing off into the environment.
  4. Dumping garbage in the dustbin and planting trees are good practices to keep our environment clean.
  5. Raising public awareness is one of the best ways to conserve our environment.

Descriptive Answer Questions (Main Text)
1. Explain the harmful effects of environmental pollution.
Ans: The effects of environmental pollution are serious.

  1. Pollution is causing a lot of damage to human, animal and the environment.
  2. Pollution causes different diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases, waterborne diseases, and skin problems.
  3. Effects of pollution on animals are the destruction of their habitats and food chains. As a result many animals get extinct.
  4.  Average temperature of the Earth is also increasing.
  5.  Many glaciers continue to melt and results in sea level rise.

2. What is noise pollution? What is the harmful impact of noise pollution?
Ans: Noise pollution is sound in the environment that harms the health of human or animal life.
Noise pollution has severe mental and physical effect on human health. Depression, hearing loss, sleep disruption, and loss of productivity are caused by noise pollution.
3. How can we prevent environmental pollution?
Ans: To safe our existence in the Earth, we have to prevent environmental pollution.

  1. By reducing the use of electricity or fossil fuel we can help conserve the environment.
  2. Turning off the lights after finishing the work, walking or riding a bicycle instead of using a car also can help preserve natural resources.
  3. Reducing the use of natural resources, reusing or recycling we can help conserving nature.
  4. We should not keep the tap running when not in use.
  5. Oils, chemicals and industrial garbage should go through treatment before throwing off into the environment.
  6. Dumping garbage in the dustbin and planting trees are good practices to keep our environment clean.
  7. Raising public awareness is one of the best ways to prevent environmental pollution.
  8. We have to stop the reasons behind pollutions.

4. Explain the negative impacts of soil pollution on human health.
Ans: Soil pollution is the contamination of soil with harmful things. People may get sick with various diseases including cancer by taking those foods grown in polluted soil. Taking foods grown in polluted soil create diseases slowly in human body. It doesn’t give any nutrition to human health, only gives severe diseases.

5. Why does population growth cause environmental pollution?
Ans: Population growth is the fundamental cause of pollution.

  1. To meet their need such as food, shelter or natural resources, people are destroying environment.
  2. Human activity causes most of the environmental pollution.
  3. To grow more food people are using pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture. It results soil pollution.
  4. To make shelter for increasing population people cut down forests, and plants.
  5. Unwise use of natural resources.
  6. Industrialization creates global warming which is caused to meet up demands of increasing population.

6. How are soil pollution and water pollution alike?

Ans: Soil pollution is the contamination of soil with harmful things. Water pollution is the addition of harmful things to water. These two types of pollution are alike.
Soil contamination is caused by the use of pesticides and fertilizers in agricultures, waste disposal from household and hospital, and leakage of chemicals or oils from factories. Similarly, water pollution is caused by harmful things from sewage, water from household or factories. Besides, disposal of garbage and waste into water, washing clothes in ponds or river cause water pollution. Rain water washes away pesticides and fertilizers into the watery lands, so water gets contaminated. So the causes behind soil pollution and water pollution are same. The bad impacts are almost same. So we can say that, soil pollution and water pollution are alike.
More Questions
1. Explain environmental pollution.
Ans: We use environment in various ways to survive. As a result, different changes occurred in the environment. When the changes are harmful to living things, we call it environmental pollution. Environmental pollution is the addition of harmful or poisonous substances into the environment.

2. Write down the causes of air pollution?
Ans: Air pollution is the addition of harmful gases, dust particles, smoke or odour into the air.

  1. Smoke emitted from the vehicles and industries is one of the main causes of air pollution.
  2. Smoke emitted from the burning wood and garbage also causes air pollution.
  3. Throwing garbage or urinating anywhere causes the foul odour in the air.
  4. Widespread use of fossil fuels.

3. Write down the names of diseases caused by various pollutions.

Names of the pollution Names of the diseases
1. Air pollution 1. Lung cancer and respiratory diseases etc.
2. Water pollution 2. Skin diseases and waterborne diseases like diarrhoea , cholera etc.
3. Soil pollution 3. Cancer.
4. Noise pollution 4. Depression, hearing loss, sleep disruption and loss of productivity.

4. What is conservation of Our Environment?
Ans: Environmental conservation is the sustainable and wise use and preservation of natural environment.
5. Write prevention of noise pollution?
Ans: We can prevent noise pollution by stopping the frequent use of horns, and turning the volume down.
6.What does 3R mean?
Ans: 3R means reduce, reuse and recycling.
7. What is acid rain?
Ans: Rain water mixed with harmful gases is called acid rain. When air is polluted in an extreme rate, acid rain is occurred. It harms our skin and hair.
